Montgomery Academy, Auburn finish as co-champs

Montgomery Academy and Auburn High wrapped up finals on Wednesday at O’Connor Tennis Center but settled nothing as the two programs finished tied for the 7A Section 2 championship with 50 points each.

Both will advance to the eight-team 7A state tournament at Mobile Tennis Center on Monday and Tuesday. 

Montgomery Academy’s Jackson Brown won at No. 2 singles while the MA doubles teams of Ron Sharma and Ford Morano won at No. 2 Anton Yang and Edwin Wu won at No. 3.

John Alford, Edwin Wu, Ford Morano, Duncan McInnes and the No. 1 doubles team of John Alford and Jackson Brown finished the tournament as runners-up.

 

LAMP finishes as runner-up, advances to state

Houston Academy defeated LAMP 54-49 in the Class 4A-5A Section 3 tournament on Tuesday, with both teams advancing to the 4A-5A state tournament next week in Mobile. 

Catholic finished third with 23 points, followed by Eufaula (13), BTW Magnet (6) and Brew Tech (2).

Three LAMP players won their matches in the finals -- Ian Kim at No. 2, Minsoo Park at No. 4 and Wonjun Lee at No. 6. The doubles team of Kim-Lee also won at No. 2.

Finishing as runners-up were LAMP’s Ian Shin at No. 1, Eric Li at No. 3 and Richard Chin at No. 5. In doubles, LAMP’s No. 1 team of Shin and Matthew Jang finished as runner-up, as did the No. 3 team of Park and Chen.

 

GIRLS TENNIS

Auburn edges Montgomery Academy for section title

Montgomery Academy and Auburn High wrapped up finals in the 7A Section 2 tournament at O’Connor Tennis Center on Wednesday with the Tigers edging the Eagles 48-45.

Both team will advance to the eight-team 7A state tournament at Mobile Tennis Center on Monday and Tuesday. 

Opelika finished third with 13 points, followed by Central-Phenix City with 11, Enterprise (7) and Dothan (5).

Montgomery Academy’s No. 1 doubles team of Gabby Berrera and Mae Mae Voltz won the section championship, while the No. 2 team of Lola Campbell and Mary Surea White and the No. 3 team of Alyssa Kaplan and Marianna Lassner both finished as runners-up.

 

Trinity wins 6A Section 2 tournament

Trinity easily won its section tournament on Tuesday, scoring 61 points to run away with the section title.

Pike Road was second with 24 points, followed by Spanish Fort (23), Robertsdale (14) and Baldwin County (4). Both Trinity and Pike Road will advance to the state tournament next week in Mobile. 

Winning in singles were Trinity’s Kingsley Johns at No. 2, Kensley Williamson at No. 3, Sally Warren at No. 4, Nora Beth Grayson at No. 5 and Henlee Gunter at No. 6. Trinity’s Aniston Skipworth lost in No. 1 finals to Spanish Fort’s Bella Wilkinson but finished as runner-up.

Trinity swept the doubles matches in the finals, with Johns-Skipworth winning at No. 1, Warren-Williamson winning at No. 2 and Grayson-Gunter winning at No. 3.

 

LAMP captures 4A-5A Section 3 championship

The Golden Tigers won the Class 4A-5A Section 3 championship on Tuesday, defeating Houston Academy 59-47. Charles Henderson finished in third with 19 points, followed by Catholic (14), Brew Tech (7) and BTW Magnet (2). 

Winning in singles were LAMP’s Grace Liu at No. 3, Dabeen Choi at No. 4, McKenzie Kim at No. 5 and Jamie Lo at No. 6. Reena Chen at No. 1 and Hanna Lee at No. 2 fell in the finals to Houston Academy, but finished as runners-up.

LAMP swept the doubles finals, with Lee-Liu winning at No. 1, Chen-Kim winning at No. 2 and Choi and Hannah Baik winning at No. 3.
