PREP RECAP (2nd Round): Capital City Conference teams move on; Lee, Pike Road fall

Trinity 41, Slocomb 0

SLOCOMB – John David Bonner completed 14 of 18 passes for 244 yards and four touchdowns to lead Trinity to a surprisingly easy 41-0 win over the Red Tops in the second round of the 3A playoffs on Friday night.

With the win, Trinity (10-2) hit the 10-win mark for the first time since 2010. It is the Wildcats’ 11th 10-win season and 11th time in the quarterfinals. Trinity will face Montgomery Academy in the quarterfinals next Friday at McLemore Field, while Slocomb ends the season at 10-2.

Bonner threw touchdown passes of 10 and 67 yards to Jake Hufham, a 39-yarder to William Roberson and a 6-yarder to Parker Patterson. Touchdown passes to Hufham, Roberson and Patterson gave the Wildcats a 20-0 halftime lead and the Wildcats came out of the break with another Bonner-to-Hufham scoring strike for a 27-point lead.

Chase Letner and Jim Portis added second-half touchdown runs to cap the rout.

Hufham led the receivers with four receptions for 113 yards and two touchdowns while making five tackles and recording an interception on defense. Roberson added 54 yards on four catches.

Letner finished with 125 yards on 12 carries, including a 51-yard touchdown run for the Wildcats.

Walton Cherry led the Trinity defense with nine tackles, while Sam Worthington contributed nine tackles, a pair of sacks and a pair of quarterback pressures. Jon Everett Dennis had seven tackles, followed by Ky Williamson with six. 

Montgomery Academy 28, Pike County 6

BRUNDIDGE – Britton Kohn rushed for 89 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead unbeaten Montgomery Academy to a 28-6 win over Pike County in the second round of the 3A playoffs on Friday night.

Montgomery Academy (12-0) hit the 12-win plateau for the fourth time in school history, joining the 1987 state championship team along with teams from 2006 and 2014. The Eagles advanced to the quarterfinals for the 10th time in program history and will face Trinity (10-2), a 41-0 winner over Slocomb, in the 3A quarterfinals next Friday at McLemore Field.

The Eagles handed Trinity its first loss of the season, 13-3, on Aug. 28 at McLemore Field.

Jashawn Cooper scored on a 6-yard run for the Eagles and Alex Kohn added the extra point for a 7-0 lead, but the Bulldogs answered with a touchdown. Carter Wallis blocked the extra-point attempt, however, to leave the Eagles in front 7-6.

Kohn scored the first of two touchdowns on an 11-yard run a minute into the second quarter and Wallis added a 3-yard scoring run with 4:28 remaining for a 21-6 halftime lead. Kohn scored again, this time on a 30-yard run with 10:34 remaining, to put the Eagles in control. 

Cooper finished with 63 rushing yards and a touchdown, followed by Jamal Cooper with 59 yards, Ben Harris with 51 rushing yards and Wallis with 47. Defensively, Wallis led the Eagles with seven tackles, followed by Jashawn Cooper, Arch Lee and Judson Lindsey, all with five tackles each.

Catholic 38, Opp 0

Jeremiah Cobb rushed for 85 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries to lead Catholic to an easy 38-0 win over the Bobcats in the second round of the 3A state playoffs.

Cobb just missed a much bigger night, having a 65-yard touchdown reception and a 38-yard touchdown run both wiped out by penalties. 

Opp (8-4) had trouble generating any offense, but the Knights were a little slow as well. A 44-yard DJ Carter reception set up a 41-yard field goal by Judd Osten on Catholic’s second possession of the game for a 3-0 lead and an LJ Green interception minutes later set up Cobb’s 2-yard touchdown run for a 10-0 lead.

After Opp missed a field goal attempt on its next possession, the Knights struck quickly with an 80-yard pass from Caleb McCreary to Carter. Carter finished as the game’s leading receiver with 124 yards on two receptions. 

The Knights put the game out of reach late in the first half, taking over with a minute left and marching goalward with a touchdown pass to Myles Butler for a 24-0 halftime lead. Butler finished with 101 yards on five catches.

After a three and out on Opp’s first possession of the second half, Kylon Griffin returned the ensuing punt 75 yards for a touchdown. The Knights added a fourth-quarter score with a 23-yard scoring run by EJ Babies.

McCreary completed 8 of 19 passes for 222 yards and a pair of touchdown passes. Defensively, the Knights got 14 tackles from Pat Ryan and 12 tackles from T.J. Dudley.

Catholic (10-2) reached the quarterfinals for the second consecutive year, a first in the history of the program. The Knights will travel to Thomasville for the 3A quarterfinals next week.

UMS-Wright 28, Pike Road 17

MOBILE – Pike Road took a 17-14 lead on a 37-yard touchdown reception by Griffin Robinson with 68 seconds remaining, only to watch as UMS-Wright scored two touchdowns in the next 25 seconds to take a stunning victory over the Patriots in the second round of the Class 5A state playoffs on Friday night.

UMS-Wright (8-4) will face region rival Faith Academy next week in the 5A quarterfinals, while Pike Road ends an 11-0 run with a loss to a Mobile team in the second round of the playoffs for the second consecutive year after losing to Mobile Christian last season.

Colby Stafford gave the Bulldogs a 14-10 lead with a 9-yard touchdown run with just 2:16 remaining, seemingly pulling off the upset, but the Patriots quickly marched to a go-ahead touchdown on Robinson’s reception.

On the ensuing kickoff, Stafford took the ball at the 5-yard line and ran 95 yards untouched to give UMS-Wright a 21-17 lead. Then the Patriots fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Cole Blaylock returned the fumble 33 yards for a touchdown with 43 seconds remaining, capping an unlikely 21-point explosion in 136 seconds.

Saraland 34, R.E. Lee 0

The Generals had opportunities early but were unable to convert into points while the Spartans took advantage of most of their scoring chances to advance in the AHSAA Class 6A playoffs Friday at Cramton Bowl.

Saraland took a 10-0 lead with nine minutes remaining in the first half when Lee put together its best drive of the game, only to see it end in disappointment. On fourth-and-goal at the Saraland 10-yard line, Jakel Williams threw a touchdown pass to Chris Dillihay but the play was called back due to a penalty.

Despite a series of three more plays due to penalties on Saraland, Lee was unable to convert and was held out of the end zone.

Throughout the game, the Generals had other chances deep inside Spartan territory but was turned away or suffered a turnover to end each threat.

The Spartans got three touchdown passes from quarterback Karson Green as well as a 2-yard run from Green in the win.

Lee running back Reggie Davis finished his career with 112 yards on 17 carries and with two catches for 19 yards.

Saraland (9-2) will be at home to face Opelika next Friday in the 6A quarterfinals. Lee’s season ends at 7-4.
