PREP RECAP (Week 5): Carver rallies to beat Lee; Prattville bombs Stanhope; Catholic rips Pike Lib

G.W. Carver 27, R.E. Lee 21
The Carver Wolverines scored the go-ahead touchdown with 9:23 left in the game and then held off the Generals’ late rally to earn an intra-city victory on Friday at Cramton Bowl.
The two teams volleyed back and forth for the game with the game tied at 14-14 at the half. Lee took the lead with 7:34 left in the third quarter on a 34-yard pass from Bryson McGrew to James Sanders.
Carver tied the game a couple of minutes later when Christian Johnson hit Marquan Jameson for 33 yards.
Johnson’s 8-yard pass to Jamar Green gave Carver the lead in the fourth quarter but Lee took its last possession down to the Carver 8-yard line and McGrew scored on a quarterback draw on fourth down with 25 seconds left in the game. But the play was called back on a holding call. Lee’s final attempt was thwarted by the Carver defense.
Johnson had 150 yards passing on 9-of-23 attempts with two touchdowns. Antonio Trone finished with 183 yards and a touchdown on 24 rushing attempts. The two were the only players to carry the ball for Carver in the game.
McGrew finished with 232 yards passing on 16 of 34 attempts. He passed for all three Lee touchdowns including the first to Johnnie Darby. Jaylon Jackson also had a touchdown reception for Lee.
Lee, still looking for its first victory of the season (0-5), returns to Class 7A, Region 2 play next Friday against Jeff Davis. Carver (5-0) is open next week and travels to Wetumpka on Oct. 7.
Prattville 49, Stanhope Elmore 10
MILLBROOK - Kam Shanks scored three times, including two returns for touchodowns to lead the Lions to their 10th straight win over the Mustangs in the series (one game was forfeited) Friday at Foshee-Henderson Stadium.
Shanks had a kickoff return of 80 yards that tied the game at 7-7. He later returned a punt return 30 yards for a score that extended the Lions lead to 21-10 late in the first half. He also added a 33-yard reception for a score third quarter.
Kelvin Blue added a touchdown reception while Donavan Arrington had a touchdown run in the first half.
The Lions (3-2) travel to Enterprise for a key Class 7A, Region 2 game while Stanhope Elmore (1-4) plays arch-rival Wetumpka next week.
Catholic 56, Pike Liberal Arts 0
TROY -- The state’s top-ranked scoring offense faced little opposition from Pike Liberal Arts on Friday as Catholic hammered the Patriots 56-0, spoiling their homecoming.
Catholic entered the game with the state’s top-rated offense, averaging 53.8 points per game, and will retain that No. 1 offensive position for at least another week as the Knights got three passing touchdowns from Caleb McCreary to hand Pike Lib the second worst loss in school history.
The Patriots (0-5) are having a tough time transitioning from the Alabama Independent School Association to the Alabama High School Athletic Association this year and the 56 points scored by the Knights is the worst beating ever by the Patriots in their tenure as an AHSAA team. The only margin of defeat higher came in 1971 in a 77-0 loss to Fort Dale Academy when the Patriots belonged to the Alabama Private School Association.
For Catholic, Friday’s game marked the 20th consecutive regular season victory by the Knights. Eleven of those were shutouts.
McCreary completed 6 of 11 passes for 178 yards and three touchdowns while throwing one interception. The junior also ran three times for 42 yards and a touchdown.
Jeremiah Cobb had just six carries but scored twice and averaged 26.8 yards per carry in amassing 161 yards.
Receivers Luke Harkless and Josh Palmer scored touchdowns as well, with Harkless getting 108 yards on three receptions and Palmer earning 62 yards on two catches. Harkless also had 124 yards and a touchdown on a pair of punt returns.
Defensively, Brennan Binns had six tackles and an interception to lead the Knights, while KJ Washington had six tackles, including two for loss, and Rickie Williams had five tackles, including three for loss, along with a pass breakup.
Catholic (6-0) will close out the regular season with four consecutive 4A Region 2 games, starting with a home game against Montgomery Academy next Friday.
Elmore Co. 35, St. Clair Co. 13
ODENVILLE - Payton Stephenson passed for 254 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Panthers to their fourth win of the season.
The Panthers racked up 372 yards in total offense while holding the home team to just 171 yards.
Stephenson added two rushing touchdowns in the win. CJ Wilkes had a touchdown run of 19 yards that gave ECHS the early lead.
Garrett Allen had 168 yards receiving with two scores on seven catches.
The Panthers (4-1) return to Class 5A, Region 4 play next week with a home game against Tallassee.
Chilton Co. 24, Tallassee 21 (OT)
CLANTON - Jorge Castillo’s 24-yard field goal in overtime lifted Chilton County to a win over Tallassee, handing the visitors their fourth straight loss.
Tallassee took a 21-14 lead midway through the fourth quarter on Tyler Ellis’s 2-yard pass to Josh Boatwright but the homesteading Tigers tied the game with just under two minutes left in the game on Cameron Miller’s touchdown pass to Jakobe Worthy.
Tallassee failed to score with its possession in overtime, setting up the game-winning field goal.
Chilton County took a 14-0 lead at halftime before Tallassee scored its first points on Lil’ Josh Griffin’s interception and score. Cade Everson followed with an 84-yard run to tie the game with 4:15 left in the third period.
Ellis had 92 yards in total offense. Rashard Childers led Chilton County with 125 yards on 25 carries.
Tallassee (2-4) goes to Elmore County for a key Class 5A, Region 4 game next week.
West Blocton 26, Holtville 7
WEST BLOCTON - The Bulldogs lost their second-straight contest, managing just 224 yards in total offense in the non-region loss.
Keiland Baker had 180 yards passing to lead the Bulldogs offense. Eric Atkins had 90 yards in receptions. Conner Hackett led the defense with 14 tackles.
Holtville (2-3) returns to Class 5A, Region 3 action next week at home against Jemison.

Edgewood Academy 21, Fort Dale Academy 14
ELMORE -- Edgewood quarterback Austin Champion scored on a quarterback sneak with 26 seconds left to lift the Wildcats to a 21-14 win over Fort Dale on Friday.
Everette Black scored on a 2-yard run in the first quarter to put Fort Dale ahead 7-0, but the Wildcats rallied with a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter, scoring on a 3-yard Champion touchdown pass and a long run for a 14-7 lead at the half.
In the third quarter, Black threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Dain Winters to tie the game at 14-14.
Black completed 6 of 14 passes for 83 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 84 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries.
Brody Stringer led Fort Dale with 11 tackles, followed by Jon Nolan Lawrence with eight. The Eagles (1-4) return to region play next week at home against Monroe Academy.
Edgewood (2-3) remains home to face Banks Academy next week before traveling to Macon East on Oct. 6.
Lowndes Academy 50, Abbeville Christian 19
ABBEVILLE -- Clayton Hussell completed 9 of 13 passes for 128 yards and three touchdowns as the Rebels jumped on Abbeville Christian for 36 first-quarter points on the way to a 50-19 win over the Generals on Friday.
Hussey threw 59 yards to Cooper Dansby, 3 yards to Andrew Myers and 15 yards to Dansby to give the Rebels a 36-0 lead late in the first quarter. Cal Knighten connected with Cole Goodson on a 50-yard pass moments later to put Abbeville Christian on the scoreboard.
The Rebels (4-1) also got points from Scott Stinson on a 1-yard run, on a safety recorded by Dansby and a 55-yard punt return by Noah Smith. Smith scored again on a 20-yard run for a 43-7 lead in the second quarter before Knighten fired a pair of touchdown passes to trim the deficit to 43-19 at the half.
Kasen Dismukes added a 7-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter for Lowndes.
Dansby led the receivers with 104 yards and a pair of touchdowns on four receptions. Smith led the running game with 57 yards and a touchdown on five carries. Dansby led the defense with 15 tackles.
Lowndes plays host to Clarke Prep next Friday, while Abbeville Christian (2-3) travels to Sparta.
Lee-Scott Academy 49, Macon East Academy 7
CECIL -- Lee-Scott won the battle of unbeatens on Friday with a 49-7 rout of the Knights, joining Class A Jackson Academy and Class AA Patrician Academy as the only unbeaten teams remaining in the Alabama Independent School Association.
Gabe Spencer had 18 carries for 105 yards to lead the Knights, while Deonte Powell completed 7 of 16 passes for 23 yards and an interception while rushing for 22 yards on 11 carries.
Defensively for the Knights, Dalton Nickles had 14 tackles, Zach Brown had 12 tackles and Thaddeus McKinney had eight tackles.
Macon East (4-1) travels to Luverne to play Crenshaw Christian next week. Lee-Scott (5-0) returns to region play with a home game next Friday against Autauga Academy.
Crenshaw Christian 35, Hooper Academy 18
LUVERNE -- Crenshaw Christian improved to 4-1 and celebrated homecoming with a 35-18 win over the Colts on Friday.
For Hooper, R.J. Coker rushed for 72 yards and a touchdown and Zach Rusley added 38 yards rushing. Lucas Spellman had 64 receiving yards and a touchdown and Coker had 20 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, Kadyn Lumley had eight tackles and forced a fumble to lead Hooper, followed by Spellman with six tackles.
Crenshaw Christian remains home next week to face Macon East Academy, while Hooper (1-4) travels to Escambia Academy next Friday.
Morgan Academy 48, Wilcox Academy 30
CAMDEN -- T.B. Clements completed 31 of 52 passes for 478 yards and six touchdowns and rushed for another as the Senators wiped out a 21-point first quarter deficit in a 48-30 victory on Friday night.
Morgan (3-2) trailed 21-0 at the end of the first quarter but turned it around in the second quarter to take a 28-24 lead at the half.
C.J. Crocker had nine receptions for 156 yards and three touchdowns, Rhyne Williams had 12 receptions for 133 yards, Allen Michael Creech had five catches for 114 yards and a pair of touchdowns and Allen Lightfoot had five receptions for 75 yards and a touchdown.
Morgan resumes region play next Friday with a game at Bessemer. Wilcox (2-3) travels to Southern Academy next Friday.
Patrician Academy 48, Monroe Academy 18
MONROEVILLE -- The Saints scored four touchdowns on five plays, jumping out to a 28-0 first quarter lead on the way to a 48-18 win over the Volunteers on Friday.
On the first play from scrimmage, Tate Boykin threw a 64-yard touchdown pass to Matthew Mize for a 6-0 lead. On the Saints’ second possession, Boykin ran 10 yards, then threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Jay Lindsey for a 14-0 lead. Cecil Perry took over at that point, catching a 58-yard touchdown pass from Boykin and adding a 64-yard touchdown run for a 28-0 lead.
Cade Ledkins threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Ty Busby to put the Volunteers on the scoreboard before the Saints scored two more touchdowns for a 42-6 halftime lead.
Boykin was 3 of 3 for 159 yards and three touchdowns, while Perry rushed for 88 yards and a pair of touchdowns on four carries.
Patrician (5-0) plays host to South Choctaw Academy next Thursday, while Monroe (2-4) travels to Fort Dale for a region game next week.
