UPDATED RECAP (Week 6): Lee tames Carver; Tallassee topples Beauregard; Vols win on Saturday

Behind three touchdown passes from Jakel Williams, the Robert E. Lee Generals earned an important Class 6A, Region 2 win over G.W. Carver, 33-15, Friday at Cramton Bowl.

Williams gave Lee an early 14-0 lead with two first-half strikes, the first to Christopher Dillihay for 21 yards with 7:28 left in the first quarter. The second came on a 16-yard completion to Johnathan Reese  with 1:23 left in the half.

The Wolverines cut into the Generals’ lead early in the third period with a 1-yard run by Desmond Hordges. The score was set up by a 51-yard pass from Tyrone Johnson to Jamar Green to the Lee 3-yard line. Green, who started at quarterback but played multiple positions for the Wolverines’ offense, also had a 10-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

But Lee answered each of Carver’s threats. Williams threw his third touchdown pass of the night early in the fourth quarter, hitting Za’Quon Lowe for 43 yards and a score.

The Lee defense earned a touchdown on a 51-yard interception return by Austin Yelder that increased the Generals’ lead to 27-7 with 9:30 to go in the game.

After Green cut the lead to 27-15, the Wolverines attempted an onsides kick only to have it fielded by Brian Thomas, who raced 50 yards untouched to the endzone.

Thomas finished with 105 yards rushing on 20 attempts. Williams had 120 yards passing on 9-of-16 attempts. Isaiah Brown and Trashad Lewis each had a sack for the Lee defense.

Johnson had 139 yards passing on 8-of-14 attempts and an interception.

Lee (4-1, 3-1 6A/R2) travels to Opelika next Friday for a key region game. Carver (3-3, 2-2) plays Eufaula next Friday.

Prattville 17, Enterprise 16

PRATTVILLE – The Lions held off fourth-quarter rally, denying the Wildcats a go-ahead touchdown from the Prattville 1-yard line in the last minutes of the game.

Enterprise drove to the 1 but Prattville forced a field goal try from Andrew Pickard, who missed a 20-yard attempt with 3:24 remaining in the game.

The Lions scored all of their points in the first half on an Albert Taggart’s 14-yard run, a 16-yard pass by E.J. Ousley and a 50-yard field goal from Collin Rogers.

The Lions (5-2, 3-1 7A, Region 2) travel to Central-Phenix City next week in an important  region clash. Enterprise (5-2, 1-2) goes to Smiths Station.

Jeff Davis 22, Smiths Station 13 (Saturday)

Rakia McCall’s block of the game-tying extra point proved to be play the Jeff Davis Volunteers would need to end their losing streak on Saturday.

The Vols held off a late rally to upend Smiths Station, 22-13, in Class 7A, Region 2 action at Cramton Bowl.

JD held a 14-7 lead in the fourth quarter when the Panthers scored on a 1-yard run by Quenton Brooks. McCall would block the extra point try of Josh Childs that allowed the Vols to hold a slim 14-13 lead with just under 10 minutes to play.

Late in the final quarter, the Vols converted a turnover into a touchdown. Again, it was McCall with the recovery and score on a 38-yard run.

JD built a 14-0 lead with two second-quarter touchdowns with Donald Harris scoring on a 17-yard run and Josh Richardson adding a 51-yard scoring run with 39 seconds remaining in the half.

The win was the first for the Vols (1-5. 1-2) since beating Park Crossing in the final game of the 2020 season. They will play at Dothan next Friday.

Tallassee 35, Beauregard 7

OPELIKA – The Tigers put up 21 points in the first half and never looked back in a key win over the Hornets on Friday.

Zavion Carr rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns to adsfasfalead Tallassee to its third win of the season and second in Class 5A, Region 4 play.

Quarterback Tyler Ellis passed for one touchdown and ran for another while Jalyn Daniels added a 2-yard run for a score for the Tigers. Dontae Howard had the touchdown reception for 60 yards.

Brayden Blackmon’s touchdown pass to Chris Gamble was the lone score for Beauregard.

Tallassee (3-2, 2-1) is back on the road to face Talladega next week. Beauregard (2-5, 1-3) travels to Sylacauga.

Sylacauga 42, Elmore County 21

SYLACAUGA – The Aggies jumped out to a quick 21-0 lead in the first quarter and won going away against the Panthers on Friday.

C.J. Wilkes had two touchdowns for the Panthers while Jabari Murphy had eight receptions for 196 yards and a touchdown. Logan Pack had a 43-yard field goal.

Maleek Pope rushed for 236 yards and four touchdowns for the Aggies.

The Panthers (0-7, 0-4) will take the week off before traveling to Beauregard on Oct. 15.

Calera 20, Stanhope Elmore 3

MILLBROOK – The Mustangs could only manage a second-quarter field goal from Jacob Bryant in a Class 6A, Region 3 loss to Calera on Friday at Foshee-Henderson Stadium.

Bryant’s 27-yard kick came with 5:11 left in the first half, cutting the Calera lead to 7-3. The Mustangs stayed within striking distance until the Eagles scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to pull away.

Stanhope Elmore falls to 4-3, 2-2 in region play and will have the week off before facing Helena on Oct. 15.

Pelham 41, Wetumpka 21

PELHAM – The Indians held a brief lead in the first half but Pelham scored 28 unanswered points to pull away for a key Class 6A, Region 3 win on Friday.

Quarterback Nathan Rogers’ 57-yard scamper with 6:30 left in the first half gave the Indians a 14-13 advantage. But they would not score again until the final minutes of the game.

Rogers had two touchdown passes with the first connecting with Stone Minnifield from 11 yards out in the first quarter. He added his second on an 83-yard screen pass to Quinn Wilson with just over two minutes left in  the game.

The Indians (3-4, 1-2) face Chilton County next week.

St. James 52, Booker T. Washington 24

KJ Jackson completed 10 of 15 passes for 177 yards and three touchdowns as the Trojans scored six first-half touchdowns on the way to a 52-24 win over Booker T. Washington in a 4A Region 2 game at Carlisle Field on Friday night.

The win allowed the Trojans (5-1) to remain atop the Region 2 standings at 4-0, a game ahead of Alabama Christian, Dale County and Geneva. The Trojans travel to Midland City to play Dale County next week. 

Cosner Harrison had 130 yards on 11 carries, scoring on runs of 9, 50 and 8 yards to propel the Trojans to victory. Cooper Wright had just two receptions from Jackson, but both (25 and 30 yards) went for touchdowns. Clint Houser had Jackson’s other touchdown pass, catching one pass for 10 yards and the touchdown pass that covered 37 yards.  

Clayton Craft added a touchdown on a 14-yard interception return and Wynston Redden had a 23-yard kick for his first career field goal. 

Jake Huff converted all seven extra-point attempts. 

Booker T. Washington, which dropped to 1-3 in region play, got three touchdown passes from Elijah Hall and a 42-yard touchdown run by Courtney Martin. 

Hall was 8 of 13 for 154 yards and three touchdowns, throwing touchdown passes of 11 and 69 yards to Mikael King and 49 yards to Cameron Whitfield. 

Trinity 17, Reeltown 14

REELTOWN -- Grayden Flowers booted a 27-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to break a 14-14 tie as the Wildcats won a defensive battle with the Rebels on Friday at Nix-Webster-O’Neal Stadium.

Reeltown (2-4) struggled to contain Tallassee, St. James and Catholic in lopsided losses earlier this year, but found the defensive strategy to contain the Wildcats, scoring two touchdowns in the final five minutes of the first half to take a 14-7 lead into the locker room.

Coleman Stanley, who had staked Trinity to an early lead with a 32-yard touchdown pass to Norris Pemberton, scored on a 2-yard run midway through the third quarter to tie the game and set the stage for Flowers’ game-winning kick.

Chase Letner had 121 rushing yards on 24 carries to lead the Trinity ground game and Stanley completed 13 of 20 passes for 150 yards and a touchdown. Pemberton had 87 yards and a touchdown on five receptions.

Trinity (6-0) improved to 4-0 in 3A Region 4 play, keeping pace with unbeaten Catholic atop the region standings. The two teams meet in two weeks at Catholic.

The Wildcats return home to host Dadeville in another Region 4 game next Friday. 

Alabama Christian Academy 56, Ashford 16

ASHFORD -- Hayes Hunt passed for five touchdowns and Corey Landers rushed for 128 yards and another score as Alabama Christian battered winless Ashford 56-16 on Friday night.

The Eagles (4-2) kept pace in the 4A Region 2 race, a game behind St. James and tied with Dale County and Geneva at 3-1. ACA returns home to face Geneva in a crucial Region 2 battle next week.

Landers scored his only touchdown on a 27-yard run with 4:31 remaining in the first quarter, but Ashford (0-5) battled back with a touchdown and a two-point conversion to take an 8-7 lead.

From there, Hunt went to work, hitting Trey Schlemmer with a 25-yard touchdown pass, DeAndre Sneed with a 26-yard touchdown pass and Avery Stuary with a 33-yard scoring toss, all in the final four minutes of the first half for a 28-8 halftime lead.

Hunt wasn’t finished, connecting with Thomas Stovall on a 21-yard touchdown pass with eight minutes remaining in the third quarter for a 35-8 lead. After Otasowie Dion ran 62 yards for a touchdown and Jack Thomas scored on a 40-yard interception return 19 seconds later, Hunt connected with Preston Hicks on a 62-yard pass for his fifth touchdown pass of the night, all to five different receivers.  

Hunt completed 11 of 14 passes for 222 yards and five touchdowns. Hicks had 88 yards and a touchdown on four receptions.  

Defensively, Dion had seven tackles to lead the Eagles, while Thomas had five tackles to go with his interception return. AC Walters had four tackles and Schlemmer had three tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery. 

Pike Road 60, Charles Henderson 6

TROY-- Iverson Hooks had 116 yards rushing, including a 72-yard touchdown run, and completed 5 of 9 passes for 117 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Rogers, as Pike Road scored five touchdowns in the second quarter to rout the Trojans 60-6 in a 5A Region 2 game on Friday.

Pike Road (6-0) improved to 4-0 in region play as the Patriots topped the 60-point mark for the third time this season. The win allowed the Patriots to stay a half-game ahead of Greenville (3-0) in the region standings and a full game ahead of Andalusia (3-1) going into next week’s game with Headland (0-3). 

Quinshon Judkins rushed for 116 yards and a pair of touchdowns on nine carries, including a 55-yard scoring run. Crinshon Crenshaw had a 10-yard touchdown reception and a 48-yard punt return for a touchdown, while Rogers had an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in addition to his touchdown catch.

Mac Ceman had a 35-yard interception return for a touchdown as well.

Brennan Jordan had three tackles and a fumble recovery, DJ Tolliver had an interception and Khurtiss Perry had a pair of sacks and a forced fumble.

Macon East Academy 28, Jackson Academy 12

CECIL -- Deonte Powell threw for 174 yards and a touchdown, rushed for two more scores and intercepted a pass on defense as Macon East Academy scored four touchdowns on the AISA’s top-rated defense in a 28-12 win over Jackson Academy on Friday night.

Powell completed 12 of 26 passes for 174 yards, including a 9-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Daniels, and scored on runs of 3 and 11 yards to help the Knights remain unbeaten at home this season. 

Gabe Spencer added 66 yards on 17 carries and scored the Knights’ other touchdown on a 10-yard run.

Daniels had seven receptions for 54 yards and led the defensive effort with 11 tackles and a fumble recovery in holding one of AISA’s top offenses in check. Parker Strickland had nine tackles and forced a fumble and Wade Desmarais added nine tackles.

Dalton Nickles had eight tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery and Teron Wright had eight tackles and a sack. JP Pugh had three sacks and caused a fumble.

Sanders Manning had two receptions for 55 yards.

Jackson Academy (5-1) came into the game with AISA’s top-rated defense, shutting out three teams and allowing only a touchdown to Fort Dale and another to Snook by the reserves. Jackson was also one of the top offenses as well, averaging 38.8 points per game this season. 

Macon East (4-3) resumes Class AA Region 1 play with consecutive games against Banks and Chambers at home and Springwood in Lanett.

Lowndes Academy 37, Crenshaw Christian 26

LUVERNE -- Parker Lee Harris ran for two touchdowns, caught a pass for another score, ran in a pair of two-point conversions and made seven tackles on defense to lead the Rebels to a 37-26 win over defending state champion Crenshaw Christian 37-26 on Friday night.

The loss was the first for Crenshaw (4-2) in the last 12 games vs. Class A competition dating back to last year. 

The Rebels jumped out to a two-touchdown lead over the Cougars, then held off a furious rally by the home team in the fourth quarter as Tyler Tyus completed 10 of 12 passes for 214 yards and a touchdown and Harris rushed for 117 yards and a pair of touchdowns on nine carries.

Tyus scored the game’s first touchdown on a 1-yard run, Harris added a 14-yard scoring run then caught a 48-yard pass from Tyus for a 23-6 lead early in the second half after adding two-point conversion runs on the second and third touchdowns.

Crenshaw came back with a pair of touchdowns to trim the deficit to 23-20 before Harris broke free on a 65-yard touchdown run for a 30-20 lead. Drake Mills, who rushed for 163 yards on 27 carries, pulled the Cougars back into the contest with a 12-yard touchdown run, but Tyus countered with an 11-yard scoring run to put the game out of reach.

The two teams combined for 756 yards in the Class A Region 1 battle.

Lowndes (4-3) improved to 2-0 in region play and will travel to Eufaula to play Lakeside in a region battle next Friday. Crenshaw (3-1 in region play) is idle next week before hosting Abbeville Christian in a region game on Oct. 15. 

Edgewood Academy 39, Lakeside School 34

ELMORE -- Austin Champion ran for an early touchdown and threw for another, helping the Wildcats win an offensive slugfest with Lakeside 39-34 on Saturday. 

Champion hit Gabe LeMaster with a 28-yard touchdown pass midway through the first quarter to break a scoreless tie, then ran 3 yards for a touchdown to give the Wildcats a 13-0 lead in a game that featured 566 yards and six turnovers between the two teams.

The first touchdown came on Ileek Quinn’s interception return for a touchdown of a Champion pass, trimming the Wildcat lead to 13-7 before Champion answered with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Trevor Rodie to reestablish the 13-point lead.

Back came Tripp Swain with a 42-yard touchdown pass to Branden Jackson early in the third quarter before Edgewood scored twice -- once on a 22-yard run by JT Brazell, another on a 38-yard scoring reception by Rodie -- for what appeared to be a comfortable 33-13 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Lakeside came roaring back with a pair of touchdown runs before Champion ran 29 yards to give Edgewood a 12-point lead with two minutes left.

Another Swain touchdown pass trimmed the deficit to five points with 94 seconds left, but the Chiefs could get no closer.

Champion was 11 of 19 for 173 yards and three touchdowns, while Rodie had 120 of those yards on six receptions.

Swain was 14 of 26 for 204 yards and a pair of touchdowns, with Jackson pulling in seven of those receptions for 117 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Bryson Boone had nine tackles to lead Edgewood, followed by Brazell with eight and LeMaster and Sam Williams with six tackles each.

Edgewood (4-2) travels to LaFayette next week for a region game at Chambers. 

Lakeside (2-3) plays host to Lowndes in a region matchup next Friday.

Banks Academy 46, Abbeville Christian 13

BIRMINGHAM -- Junior Josh Bonner rushed for 288 yards and four touchdowns as the Jets won their fifth game of the season with a non-region win over the Generals on Friday.

Banks (5-2) travels to Cecil next week for a big region game against Macon East Academy. Abbeville Christian (2-4) travels to Harpersville next week for a region matchup with Coosa Valley.  

Fort Dale 57, Hooper 35

GREENVILLE -- Hooper registered its highest offensive total of the season, but it wasn’t enough to spoil Fort Dale’s homecoming on Friday night.

R.J. Coker rushed for 83 yards and a touchdown, Zac Rusley rushed for 70 yards and a touchdown and Emmanuel Grant rushed for 49 yards and a touchdown but the Colts couldn’t find enough defensive stops to pull off the victory.

The Colts picked up another touchdown when Robert McGinty grabbed an onside kick and ran 49 yards for a touchdown.

Rusley led the defensive effort with eight tackles and a blocked kick. Shawn Murphy and McGinty each had seven tackles.

Hooper (2-4) returns home to play Glenwood on Thursday at Davis Henry Field. Fort Dale (2-4) remains home to play Monroe next Friday.

Patrician Academy 43, South Choctaw 0

BUTLER -- Tyler Lewis threw three touchdown passes, added four extra points and closed out the night with a field goal to lead the Saints to a 43-0 win over South Choctaw Academy on Thursday night.

Lewis completed 5 of 6 passes for 164 yards and three touchdowns, throwing 20 yards to Gavin Lewis, 44 yards to Jay Lindsey and 76 yards to Tate Boykin 14 seconds into the second quarter for a 20-0 lead.

Cecil Perry added a 55-yard touchdown run and Boykin scored on a run of 24 yards to give Patrician a 34-0 halftime lead.

Patrician (4-2) travels to Southern for a region game next Friday, while South Choctaw (2-4) plays host to Sparta in a region game.
