BOYS SOCCER
Montgomery Academy 3, St. Michael’s 1
The Eagles scored a pair of quick goals and turned the game over to their defense, securing a 3-1 win over St. Michael’s in the second round of the state soccer playoffs on Tuesday night at McLemore Field.
Montgomery Academy (22-0-1) will play area rival LAMP in the 4A-5A quarterfinals on Thursday at 7 p.m. at McLemore Field, playing a day earlier than scheduled to avoid inclement weather.
The Eagles scored their first goal 30 seconds into the contest as Ruston Bassett stole the ball and passed deep to Lukas Yi, who shot over the goalkeeper who was away from his box. A few minutes later, Brewer Welch found Alex Kohn on the side. Kohn crossed to Braxton Welch on top of the 18-foot line. Braxton Welch finished on goal with a great one touch on the side of the net.
Montgomery Academy made it 3-0 in the second half when Braxton Welch found Kohn again on the wing, who then crossed to Bassett to finish on goal.
The visitors scored their only goal with five minutes left on the clock.
