PREP VOLLEYBALL: Mayor's Cup moves to campuses this weekend

The annual Mayor’s Cup will be held in Montgomery this weekend, but for the first time in several years the event will not be held in the Multiplex at Cramton Bowl.
Saturday’s FCS Kickoff Classic at Cramton Bowl will create a scheduling conflict, moving the volleyball tournament to Trinity and Catholic instead.
The event, as usual, will include some of the best teams in the state, an early-season gauge for programs to see how they stack up against the state’s premier programs.
“Of the 20 varsity teams, 14 of them are ranked,” Montgomery Academy coach Julie Gordon said. “Spanish Fort, St. Paul’s, Pelham, John Carroll. You want the top four to come out at the end, so you try to spread them out” in the brackets for pool play. “It’s great for our city. It brings in a lot of revenue.”
The top two teams in each of the four pools with advance to gold bracket single-elimination play on Saturday afternoon, set for approximately 3:30 p.m. and concluding with the finals at approximately 6 p.m. The third-place and fourth-place teams in each pool will advance to a similar bracket for consolation play.
Defending 3A state champion Trinity, Spanish Fort and John Carroll are among the favorites in pool one that includes Wetumpka and Brew Tech.
Prattville Christian, Providence Christian and defending 6A runner-up St. Paul’s Episcopal are the favorites in pool two that includes Alabama Christian and Prattville.
Pike Road, defending 5A state champion Bayside Academy and St. James are among the favorites in pool three that includes Elmore County and Pelham.
Defending 4A runner-up Montgomery Academy, defending 3A runner-up Catholic and 4A semifinalist LAMP are among the favorites in pool four that includes Houston Academy and G.W. Carver.
“It’s going to be a challenge that will push us, but I think it’s going to be great, it’s going to be fun, it’s going to help us come together as a team,” Montgomery Academy sophomore Caroline McDaniel said. “It’s going to be a great experience this weekend.”
