PRESS PICKS (Week 11): Another 'Game of the Century' has arrived
STAFF REPORT
Are we to believe the Tennessee-Georgia matchup is the best the SEC has produced in a decade like some are stating?
Considering this is not a No. 1 vs. 2 game (at least outside the AP poll), it’s not.
But it might be one of the more intriguing games we’ve seen in a while.
Yes, Tennessee is scoring at will against most everyone. But Georgia has continued its saltiness on defense.
But so had Alabama before the Third Saturday in October.
It will be fun watching this weekend - did we ever think a matchup of ranked Bama vs. ranked LSU would be bumped off the top rung for television? It has, thanks to the ridiculous offense that the Vols possess and the fact that Georgia is still unbeaten after winning a national title last year.
What will this do for the playoffs? It was touched on last week with the first CFP poll out this week, but the loser becomes big fans of whomever Bama plays the rest of the season. If the Tide runs the table, the loser of this game might get left out of playoff consideration.
No offense to other one-loss teams but as long as Bama is in the hunt, none of those will jump them. Not the Michigan-Ohio State loser, any Pac-12 team or Big 12 champ.
If Ole Miss finds a way into the discussion (which would include a win over the Crimson Tide), there might be a big fight since the Rebels didn’t exactly have much of a non-conference schedule.
If LSU wins out… will there be a two-loss team in the playoff? If the Tigers win the SEC, there might be.
But back to Tennessee and Georgia. Some are already touting that both teams deserve a spot, but who do you leave out? If one or the other wins the SEC, it will happen. If Bama wins? It won’t.
Clemson will go undefeated. The winner of the Buckeyes-Wolverines will probably. be undefeated. Yes, TCU might be there too but it’s way too early to talk about that.
All of this can cause a headache. But we wait and enjoy the final weeks of the season.
Oh, and enjoy the weekend of big games.
Doug Amos saw his lead shrink over the panel after 10 weeks.
