Revamped SEC schedule released; Iron Bowl stays on T'Giving but not last regular season game
STAFF REPORT
The new schedule is out for the Southeastern Conference and it’s different.
Alabama and Auburn will meet on Thanksgiving weekend but that is not the final game of the regular season for the two teams.
The season, originally set to begin Sept. 5, moves up to a Sept. 26 start and will end Dec. 5. There is one bye week for each team and Dec. 12 is set to be used for any make up games.
The Crimson Tide will open the season at Missouri and follow with the home opener against Texas A&M. The other key games come on Oct. 17 versus Georgia, Nov. 14 at LSU and the annual Iron Bowl against Auburn on Nov. 28. The rivalry against Tennessee kept its tradition on the “Third Saturday of October” or close to it on Oct. 24.
Auburn will open against Kentucky and then face Georgia on the road. The Tigers play host to LSU on Halloween Night and later face Tennessee at home on Nov. 21. The Tigers close with Texas A&M on Dec. 5.
Last month, the SEC established Sept. 26 as the new kickoff for its 2020 football season to allow its universities to focus on the healthy return of their campus communities and the gradual re-introduction of athletics, as the 14 members of the SEC continue to monitor developments related to COVID-19.
The 2020 SEC football season is comprised of a 10-game Conference-only schedule and the SEC Football Championship Game will be played December 19 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, rescheduled from the original date of Dec. 5. The schedule includes one mid-season open date for each school and an open date on Dec. 12 for all schools.
Each SEC team will play 10 conference football games to include six games against division opponents and four games against non-division opponents.
The season is scheduled to begin on Sept. 26 and will culminate with the SEC Championship Game. It will be the 29th edition of the game and the 27thin the city of Atlanta.
