SEC BASKETBALL: League releases opponents for 2024-25 season

It took a while but the office of the Southeastern Conference finally announced the conference opponents for the 2024-25 basketball season.

Each of the 16 members will play 18 games during the season, which will run from Jan. 4 through March 8. Each team will play three teams home-and-home and split the rest, facing the others once.

Alabama will have a difficult schedule with home and home series against Auburn, Mississippi State and Kentucky while Auburn will play Georgia, Ole Miss and the aforementioned Alabama.

The league officially made true on various rumors on just what the schedules would look like with the addition of both Texas and Oklahoma to the league next season. The question was how many games would each team play in-conference and how would each team’s schedule be crafted.

The solution - keep the schedule at 18 games and each team drop a permanent home-and-home series.

Now teams will play two teams in a continual home-and-home series and alternate each of the remaining 12 teams in a home-and-home rotation each year. The remaining teams will be split home-and-away games.

Although the SEC did not release the permanent teams, it looks as though the league kept many of the annual rivalries. Alabama and Auburn will keep their annual rivalry while Bama will continue to play Mississippi State twice each year. Auburn will keep Georgia on its schedule as the annual home-and-home opponent.

According to the SEC release, the continuation and renewal of historic rivalries was a point of emphasis when creating the schedule as the SEC welcomes Oklahoma and Texas as new members in 2024-25. Additionally, preexisting home-and-away rotations for single-play opponents were preserved.

Alabama’s home games include Auburn, Kentucky, Florida and Mississippi State, all NCAA Tourney teams a seasons ago.

Auburn will face the Crimson Tide, Florida, Mississippi State and Tennessee at home, where the Tigers lost just one game in 2023-24.

Times, dates and television information will be announced at a later date.

The SEC Tournament returns to Nashville, Tenn., as Bridgestone Arena will host the event from March 12-16, 2025.
