SPORTS BRIEFS: Biscuits win third straight; PCA softball knocks off Catholic

The Montgomery Biscuits (3-2) won their third straight in a dominant 6-1 win over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (3-2) on Thursday at Riverwalk Stadium.

Cole Wilcox won his 2024 debut with five hitless innings, and Carson Williams went 4-for-4 with a solo homer and finished a triple shy of the cycle to lead the offense.

The Biscuits pitching staff has allowed five earned runs in the first five games.

Montgomery jumped out in front in the first on a two-run single from Kenny Piper. Pensacola got a run back in the third after three errors by the Biscuits.

Leading 2-1 in the third, Dominic Keegan crushed a three-run homer to right field to make it 5-1. The homer was Keegan’s first in Double-A.

Williams stung a solo shot over the right-field wall in the seventh inning for his fourth hit of the game to make it 6-1. In four games, Williams is 8-for-18 with a home run, three doubles, and four RBIs.

Patrick Wicklander tossed two shutout innings with four strikeouts for the second straight time out of the bullpen. Keyshawn Askew and Alfredo Zarraga each pitched a scoreless inning to finish out the 6-1 win.

Game 3 of the series is Friday at Riverwalk Stadium. A starter to be named later for Montgomery while Valente Bellozo will start for Pensacola. The first pitch is at 6:35 pm CT.

HS .SOFTBALL

Prattville Christian 2, Catholic 0

Prattville Christian’s Laura Beth NeSmith and Catholic’s Jennifer Looney each pitched a complete game in a pitchers’ duel at Catholic on Thursday, with the Panthers scoring a pair of runs in a 2-0 win.

NeSmith allowed just a double to Gabby Eady while striking out 10 batters. Looney allowed just a pair of singles to Peyton Thrash and Sara Payton while walking four batters and striking out one.

Thrash’s single drove in a run and the Panthers picked up a second run on a sacrifice fly by Chloe Hollon.

PCA (13-3) will travel to Albertville to play in a softball tournament hosted by Sardis, facing Southside-Gadsden in the opener on Friday.  

St. James 17, LAMP 2 (4)

Ava Stanford went 2 for 4 with a home run, scoring three times and driving in three runs as the top-ranked Trojans scored the first nine runs of the game on the way to a four-inning rout of the Golden Tigers at St. James on Thursday.

Emily Darby went 2 for 3, scoring three runs and driving in another, Emily Needham went 1 for 1 with two RBIs and both Taylor Washington and Aleigha Davis went 1 for 3 with two RBIs for the Trojans.

Davis started and surrendered just one hit in two innings. Stanford allowed two runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning and Peyton Middleton pitched the final 1.1 innings of no-hit ball, striking out three.

Ana Clark went 1 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs to lead LAMP.

St. James (22-1) travels to Montgomery Academy on Monday for a 3A Area 6 game, followed by home games with Pike Road on Tuesday and Trinity on Thursday.

Prattville 17-20, Julian 0-6

The Lions swept a doubleheader from Jullian on Thursday at Lagoon Park Softball Complex, winning 17-0 and 20-6 to improve to 5-1 in 7A Area 3 play.

In the first game, Emma Moore threw a no hitter, going four innings with five strikeouts.

Kaylee Robles went 3 for 4 with three doubles and four RBIs, Kennedy Crum went 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs, Maddie Putteet went 2 for 3 with a double and drove in two runs, Grace Scrimpshire went 1 for 1 and scored three times and Zarria Bozeman went 2 for 4 and scored a run.

In the second game, Scrimpshire picked up the win in the circle, giving up four runs and striking out one in two innings of work.

Robles went 1 for 1, scored four runs and drove in two more, Crum went 2 for 2 and drove in three runs, Bozeman went 1 for 2 with a triple and two RBIs, Brooklyn Johnson went 1 for 3 with two RBIs, Jodie Gentry went 2 for 2 with a double and an RBI and Scrimpshire went 2 for 2 and drove in a pair of runs.

Prattville (11-15) will travel to Calera for a tournament on Friday and Saturday before hosting a pair of crucial area games against Dothan on Tuesday and Enterprise on Thursday.

BASEBALL

Alabama Christian 8, Montgomery Academy 7

Jackson Burton went 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles and drove in three runs to lead Alabama Christian to an 8-7 win over Montgomery Academy at Bowman Field on Thursday.

The win was the first for ACA (1-4) in area play, while Montgomery Academy dropped to 2-3. The two teams close out the series with a Friday doubleheader at the AUM Dixie Baseball field.

Mac Moorer went 2 for 3 and scored three times to lead the ACA offense, while Landon Nelson went 1 for 4 with an RBI.

Jackson McGuire picked up the win on the mound, allowing just four earned runs in 5.2 innings while striking out seven. Cam Sutton earned the save, pitching the final 1.1 innings of shutout ball with one strikeout.

BOYS SOCCER

Oak Mountain 5, Montgomery Academy 4

BIRMINGHAM -- Brewer Welch scored a pair of goals on penalty kicks for the Eagles, but Oak Mountain escaped with a 5-4 win over Montgomery Academy on Thursday

Jacob Stubblefield and Luis Rubio each scored a goal for the Eagles in the loss.  

Catholic 9, Booker T. Washington 2

TUSKEGEE -- Joe Reeves scored five goals and assisted on two others to lead the Knights to a 9-2 area win at Booker T. Washington on Thursday night.

Catholic improved to 9-1 in 4A Area 2 play and will decide the area next week with games at Trinity on Tuesday and Dale County on Thursday.

In addition to Reeves’ goals, the Knights got a goal each from Max Freeman, Ben Chitlik, Garrett Sanford and Airyn Gilbert.

JP Costa had a pair of assists and Stott Blancas, Chitlik, Frankie Hayner and Freeman each added an assist.

Catholic (13-3) returns home to play Wetumpka on Saturday morning.
