SPRING PREPS: Trinity's Champion scores 100th career goal in win; Lowndes baseball shuts out Hooper

Trinity senior Jackson Champion scored his 100th career goal as the Wildcats won their 10th consecutive game with a 4-0 win over LAMP at Ragsdale-Boykin Field on Tuesday.  

Champion’s 100th goal was courtesy of an assist from Will Owen that gave the Wildcats an early 1-0 lead over the Golden Tigers. Champion finished with three goals, giving him 102 in his career.

The shutout was the fifth straight for Trinity (10-4-1), which improved to 7-0 in 4A Area 2 play.

Kip Brown added a goal and an assist for Trinity, which has outscored its area opponents 56-1 this season. The Wildcats remain home to play area rival Catholic on Thursday with the girls’ game at 5:30 p.m., followed by the boys’ game. 

Prattville Christian 1, Sylacauga 0

PRATTVILLE -- Cade Segars scored the game’s only goal as the Panthers defeated Sylacauga 1-0 at Panther Stadium on Tuesday night.

Eric Sumrall recorded the shutout in goal.  

PCA (2-3) will travel to Tuscaloosa to play Holy Spirit on Friday.

GIRLS SOCCER

Prattville Christian 0, Sylacauga 0

PRATTVILLE -- Prattville Christian and Sylacauga fought to a scoreless tie at Panther Stadium on Tuesday night as PCA goal keeper Kendall Jordan recorded the shutout in goal.  

PCA (3-1-1) will play host to BTW Magnet on Thursday.

BOYS TENNIS

Montgomery Academy 9, Opelika 0

OPELIKA -- Montgomery Academy swept singles and doubles matches in a 9-0 win at Opelika on Tuesday.

The Eagles recorded singles wins by Whit Davis, Charlie Hill, John Alford, Jackson Brown, Ford Morano and Edwin Wu.

The doubles teams of Davis-Hill, Alford-Brown and Ron Sharma-Morano swept their trio of matches as well.  

Montgomery Academy (11-4) improved to 4-0 against 7A Section 2 opponents this year and will face a stiff test from 7A Florence High on Thursday at Lagoon Park Tennis Center.

BASEBALL

Montgomery Academy 6, Catholic 4

Rick McBride went 3 for 3 with a triple and a pair of stolen bases and Will Hardin drove in three runs as the Eagles defeated Catholic at Bowen Field on Tuesday.

Hardin went 2 for 3 in the win, while Parker Cook went 1 for 3, Oscar Fiore went 1 for 3 with an RBI and John Allen Jones added an RBI for the Eagles.

Montgomery Academy pitched each of their first three pitchers for two innings, with starter Ware McCollum allowing three hits and two runs, none earned, while striking out two. Hardin pitched the third and fourth innings, allowing two hits, while Fiore pitched two innings of no-hit ball, striking out three. Beau Smith pitched the seventh, allowing two hits and two earned runs.

Both teams will be in 3A Area 6 series this weekend. Montgomery Academy (7-5) will travel to St. James on Thursday for a 5 p.m. game, while Catholic will travel to Trinity. On Friday, Montgomery Academy will play host to St. James in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m., while Catholic will play host to Trinity in a doubleheader.

Lowndes Academy 10, Hooper Academy 0
Lowndes Academy secured the victory thanks to six runs in the fourth inning in Tuesday’s win.  Clayton Hussey, Walker Mcqueen, Dominic Dougan, and Jase Howard each had RBIs in the inning.
Hussey pitched four innings, allowing no runs and one hit, striking out three and walking one.
Clay Duncan went 2-for-2 for the Rebels.
RJ Coker had a double for Hooper.

SOFTBALL

St. James 9, LAMP 0

Emily Needham pitched a no hitter against LAMP on Tuesday, with one walk and a pair of fielding errors the only thing between the Trojan ace and a perfect game.

Needham struck out 11 batters in seven innings, allowing just three base runners in the process. Two players reached on errors and Joanna Joiner drew a walk.

Ava Stanford went 3 for 5 and scored three runs, Sydney Johnston went 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI and KK Hall went 2 for 4 with a run scored and two RBIs as St. James celebrated only their fourth victory since 2008 over the Lady Golden Tigers.

St. James scored two runs in the bottom of the first as Stanford led off with a single and consecutive bunt hits and an infield error plated Stanford. Johnston scored on a walk before three force outs at the plate ended the inning.

The Trojans added three run in the bottom of the second, two scoring on a Tat Shuford double.

St. James pushed the lead to seven in the bottom of the third as Emily Darby and Johnston each had RBI doubles.

The Trojans scored their final two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a fielder's choice and a dropped sacrifice fly.

St. James (12-8-1) remains home to play Pike Road on Thursday.
