SPRING ROUNDUP: St. James baseball tops Catholic; MA sweeps Brew Tech

St. James 10, Catholic 7

Cooper Wright came on to pitch a strong final two innings for the Trojans in a back and forth game as Saint James evened its record at 8-8 with a 10-7 victory over Capital City Conference foe Catholic on Monday.
The Trojans scored three runs in the bottom of the first. Ethan Beard reached on an error, stole second and scored on a Zac Russell double. After a walk to Carson Howard and a fly out, both runners would score on a Tyson Eley sacrifice fly and a wild throw home.
Catholic, however, responded with six in the top of the second as each of the first six batters reached and scored. J.C. Hardigree singled, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Hudson Parrish walked and Marcus Dees was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Hardigree eventually scored on an error and Justin Rose walked to reload the bases. Alex Weiser singled and Spencer Bach drove in two with a double. Bach eventually scored the sixth run of the inning on a two out-double by Dean Johnson.
Saint James tied the game by scoring two unearned runs in the bottom of the second and a single run in the bottom of the third on a Beard sacrifice fly.
Catholic retook a one-run lead in the fourth on an unearned run. Saint James would again tie the game in the fifth on an unearned run after a Beard RBI single.
Saint James would seal the game in the sixth on an error and consecutive hits by Howard, K.J. Jackson and Eley before Wright earned the win despite Catholic bringing the potential tying run to the plate.
The Trojans will continue area play, weather permitting, with a single game at Paterson Field Thursday and a home doubleheader against LAMP Thursday and Friday.
The Catholic JV scored nine runs in the fourth inning and held on for a 9-7 victory over the junior varsity Trojans in a five-inning game which followed.

Trinity 10, LAMP 0 

Coleman Ellis struck out six and surrendered just one hit as the Wildcats shut out the Golden Tigers 10-0 at Jason Armstrong Field on Monday. 

William Roberson, Walton Cherry, Ben Easterling and Mac McClinton all had two hits and at least one RBI for the Wildcats. 

Trinity (5-5) has now scored 32 runs in its last three games and will face Walnut Ridge in the opening round of the Gulf Coast Classic at Robertsdale High on Monday. 

Montgomery Academy 19-4, Brewbaker Tech 3-2

The Eagles won the first game with offense and the second game with pitching and defense to sweep a doubleheader from Brewbaker Tech on Monday at Bowen Field. 

In the first game, Montgomery Academy generated 19 runs with 10 hits to defeat the Rams in a game shortened to five innings by the 10-run mercy rule. Harris Gowan pitched the first three innings, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out three, and Oscar Fiore pitched the final two innings, giving up just one unearned run on one hit while striking out three.

Parker Cook went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and both Carter Wallis and Ridge Lindsey went 2 for 2 with two RBIs to lead the offense. Britton Kohn went 1 for 3 and drove in three runs, while Walton Norrell went 1 for 1, Gowan went 1 for 1 and drove in a run and Tom Main went 1 for 1 and drove in a run. 

In the second game, Luke Nelson allowed just two runs and one hit while striking out eight in four innings of work to lead the Eagles to a 4-2 victory. Judson Lindsey pitched two innings of no-hit ball, striking out three, and Beau Smith picked up the save by allowing one hit and striking out two in the seventh inning.

Kohn went 2 for 3 and drove in a pair of runs and Judson Lindsey went 2 for 3 to lead the offense. Gowan, Nelson, Cook and Norrell all had a hit for the Eagles.

Montgomery Academy (5-5-1) remains home to play Tallassee on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Macon East Academy 21, Hooper Academy 7

HOPE HULL -- Colby Cox had three hits and four RBIs to lead the Knights to an easy victory over the Colts on Monday at Hooper Academy.

Barrett Spaeth earned the victory on the hill for Macon East, allowing seven hits and four runs over four innings while striking out three and walking one. 

Macon East (13-5) returns home to play Lowndes Academy on Tuesday at 4 p.m. 

SOFTBALL

Catholic 19, Trinity 3

Alanna Aiken picked up the win in the circle and helped her cause at the plate with a three-run home run as Catholic won its 3A Area 6 opener with a 19-3 win at Trinity on Monday. 

Aiken pitched six innings, scattering eight hits and striking out six batters. At the plate, she scored four times and drove in five runs. 

CeCe Crawford added two hits and two RBIs for Catholic, while Auburn Wilcoxson had two hits and two RBIs, Nona Johnson had a pair of hits and scored three runs and Hannah Parrish had two RBIs and scored three runs. Jennifer Looney and Rylee Wilcoxson also had two hits each, their first hits on the varsity.

Catholic (9-7-1) travels to Prattville for another area game with Prattville Christian Academy on Thursday.

Macon East Academy 11, Hooper Academy 1

HOPE HULL -- Macon East scored six runs in the fourth inning and Kylee Smith shut down the Colts’ bats as the Knights won 11-1 in a game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.

Devyn Debardelaben and Georgia Blaze drove in runs with bases-loaded walks in the fourth, while Breann Morrison, Alyssa Clark and Anna Grace Lott had RBI hits as well. Morrison and Smith each had three hits in the win, while Lott had two. 

 Taylor McKinney was intentionally walked in each of her three at-bats, including once with the bases loaded.

Smith pitched a complete game, allowing one run on seven hits and striking out two in five innings of work.

GIRLS SOCCER

Montgomery Academy 10, LAMP 0 

Kaitlin Phenix scored four goals as the Eagles shut out the Golden Tigers 10-0 in area play on Monday night.

Six other players scored a goal each for Montgomery Academy, including the first varsity goal by Valentina Rubio. Haley Cox weighed in with two assists on the night. 

“I thought it was a great team performance and was good to get a lot of the younger girls some big minutes,” MA coach Joseph White said. “Special mention to Valentina for a great performance, capped off with her first high school goal.”

Prattville Christian 3, Stanhope Elmore 0

MILLBROOK -- Kathleen Cary led the Lady Panthers with two goals and Chloe Steakley added a goal as PCA shut out Stanhope Elmore on Monday night.

Landry Hughes recorded the shutout in goal for PCA (4-2-1).
