WEEKEND PREPS: Trinity boys, Pike Road girls win sub-regional; Tallassee wins wrestling sectional

Trinity 70, Monroe County 51

MONROEVILLE -- Cayson Keller and John Morris combined for 18 points in a third-quarter explosion as the Wildcats defeated Monroe County in the 3A sub-regional round in the Monroe County High gym on Saturday night.

Trinity (17-9) will advance to the Central Regional at Birmingham’s Bill Harris Arena, facing Southside-Selma on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Morris scored 27 points, including eight in the third quarter, and Keller had 19 points, including 10 in the third quarter, as the Wildcats pulled away from a 29-20 halftime lead.

Harvey Ruffin led Monroe County with 17 points, scoring 11 in the fourth quarter. Al’Terrius Beasley added 11.

 American Christian 58, Prattville Christian 36

TUSCALOOSA -- Cade Segars led the Panthers with 13 points but American Christian defeated Prattville Christian 58-36 in the 4A sub-regional round at American Christian Academy on Saturday.

Segars set the single-season record at PCA for most 3-pointers made in a season with 128, passing the previous school record of 126 set by Carson Roberson.

PJ Evans added 11 points and six rebounds for PCA (16-16), followed by Brady Roberson with nine points and seven rebounds and Collier Connell with three points and five rebounds. Justin Chapman grabbed four rebounds.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Pike Road 43, McGill-Toolen 42

MOBILE -- Audrey Blaine hit a jumper in the lane with five seconds remaining to send the Pike Road Lady Patriots to the regionals at McGill Toolen on Saturday afternoon.

Jazz Johnson led the Patriots with 14 points , six rebounds and two blocked shots. KJ Fencher added 10 points, while Blaine had nine points and six rebounds. 

The Patriots (21-5) will face Theodore in the South Regional at Garrett Coliseum on Thursday at 9 a.m., with the winner advancing to the regional finals on Feb. 20 at 9 p.m. McGill-Toolen ends the season at 23-10.

St. James 77, Thomasville 37

Ava Card scored 22 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead the Trojans to a 40-point win over the Tigers in a 3A sub-regional game in the St. James gym on Friday night.

Natalie Barton added 18 points and five assists and Morgan Lilly had eight points for the Trojans, who advanced to the Central Regional at Birmingham’s Bill Harris Arena.

St. James (26-5) will play Sumter Central in the opening round of the Central Regional on Friday afternoon, with the winner advancing to the finals on Feb. 21 at 12:30 p.m. 

 

Trinity 64, Monroe County 27

MONROEVILLE -- Mya Moscowitz and Maddie Smith each scored 21 points to lead the Wildcats to a 37-point win over Monroe County High in a 3A sub-regional game in the Monroe County gym on Friday night.

Smith also grabbed six rebounds, dished out four assists and had five steals. 

Ellie Causey added 11 points for Trinity (23-6), which will face Randolph County (15-11) in the opening round of the Central Regional on Friday afternoon, with the winner advancing to the finals on Feb. 21 at 12:30 p.m.

Prattville Christian 61, Northside 19

PRATTVILLE -- Kayden Carr led the Lady Panthers with 30 points and eight rebounds in a sub-regional game played on Friday in the PCA gym.

Avery Rogers added 23 points, four rebounds and four steals, while Leah Cate Wilson grabbed eight rebounds and Ally Blankinchip grabbed six. LB NeSmith scored three points. 

PCA (25-7) will play Dora in the opening round of the Central Regional at Bill Harris Arena on Feb. 19, with the winner advancing to the finals on Feb. 21 at 4 p.m.

Jackson 83, Catholic 76 (2 OT)

Jackson heated up in the fourth quarter and tied the game at 62-62 in regulation, then 67-67 in overtime before finally winning in the second overtime period against the Knights in a 4A sub-regional game at PICE Arena on Friday night.

Catholic (14-12) led 24-12 at the end of the first quarter, 33-20 at the half and held a 10-point lead at the start of the fourth quarter before Jackson rallied. 

Hannah Smith led Catholic with 28 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals, followed by Heaven Bailey with 21 points, six assists, four rebounds and three steals, Kierstyn Green with 13 points and three steals and Grace Levanda with eight points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals. 

Jackson will face Orange Beach in the opening round of the South Regional at Garrett Coliseum on Feb. 19, with the winner advancing to the finals on Feb. 21 at 4 p.m.

BOYS SOCCER

Catholic 3, Tallassee 1

Todd Bonnell, JP Costa and Henry Skala each scored a goal as the Knights defeated Tallassee 3-1 in the YMCA Tournament on Saturday afternoon. 

Bonnell and Stott Blancas had assists as Catholic bounced back from a 1-0 loss to Alabama Christian Academy in the tournament on Saturday morning. 

Catholic (2-1) plays at St. James on Tuesday and at ACA on Thursday.

 Catholic 11, BTW Magnet 1 

The Knights got two goals each from Todd Bonnell, Tymari Isner, JP Costa and Henry Skala and a goal each from Joe Reeves, David Conceicao and Juan Escalante to defeat BTW Magnet in the opening round of the YMCA tournament on Friday night.

Escalante assisted on four goals, while Bonnell assisted on three, Skala had two assists and Isner had one. 

Catholic (1-0) will face Alabama Christian and Tallassee on Saturday to close out the tournament, then will play at St. James on Tuesday.

GIRLS SOCCER

Dothan 2, Montgomery Academy 0

Class 7A Dothan scored two late goals to win against the Eagles 2-0 on Saturday.

“Overall the girls were outstanding this weekend and the coaching staff couldn’t be prouder with the energy and work ethic throughout all three games,” said Montgomery Academy coach Darius Rashid “Playing two very good 7A schools as our first games of the season and holding our own shows how good our girls are and we are only going to get better from here.”

Montgomery Academy (1-1-1) will return to action on Wednesday at home against Northridge at McLemore Field at 5 p.m.

 

Montgomery Academy 0, Huntsville 0

The Eagles and Class 7A powerhouse Huntsville High fought to a scoreless draw on Friday night. 

“The mindset and determination to give it our all showed in a very even 0-0 draw,” said Montgomery Academy coach Darius Rashid. “The girls showed tremendous work ethic and never stopped running throughout the game and fully deserved the result.”

Montgomery Academy 1-0-1 returned to action on Saturday against Dothan.

 

Montgomery Academy 3, Prattville 0

Junior Sophia Cho scored all three goals in the game as the Eagles opened the 2024 season with a 3-0 win over Prattville on Thursday night.

 

WRESTLING

Tallassee wins South Sectional

Tallassee’s Land Bell (54-0) earned an 8-7 decision over Gulf Shores’ Charles Knight in the Class 5A 144-pound finale to keep his record perfect and lead the Tigers to a Class 5A South Regional title Saturday at Garrett Coliseum.

Bell won the 132-pound title last season. Ramon Lozada (40-0) at 120 pounds also stayed undefeated this season. Mason Nelson earned the title at 106 pounds.

Catholic finished second in Class 1A-4A with 175 points. Charles Chappelle won the 190-pound class for the Knights.

PCA finishes third in the South Super Sectional

Prattville Christian had seven state qualifiers, the most in a non-Covid year, in the South Super Sectional at Garrett Coliseum on Friday and Saturday, finishing third among all 1A-4A teams.

Aiden Cockrell finished first in his weight division and qualified for the state tournament, while Matthew Post and Spencer Perkins finished second and Carter Copeland and Bryson Bowman placed third. Brysen Pugh was fourth in his weight class and Ryan Loueck was sixth.

All seven will travel to Huntsville and participate in the three-day Class 1-4A state championships at the Von Braun Center. 

 

GIRLS TENNIS

LAMP 6, Houston Academy 3

The Golden Tigers won four singles matches and two of the three doubles events to defeat Houston Academy 6-3 on Friday afternoon. 

In singles, LAMP’s Grace Liu defeated Ananya Reddy at No. 3, Dabeen Choi defeated Naya Bilbeisi at No. 4, McKenzie Kim beat Bentley Tucker at No. 5 and Jamie Lo defeated Amulya Reddy at No. 6.

Houston Academy’s Kenza Bilbeisi won at No. 1, defeating Reena Chen in a hard-fought match, while Mary Parker Williams edged Hannah Baik at No. 2 in another closely contested battle.

In doubles, Kenza Bilbeisi and Williams defeated Choi and Baik at No. 1 for Houston Academy, while LAMP’s Chen-Kim beat Ananya Reddy and Naya Bilbeisi at No. 2 and Liu-Lo beat Bentley Tucker and Amulya Reddy at No. 3.

LAMP 8, BTW Magnet 1

The Golden Tigers won five of the six singles matches and swept doubles to defeat BTW Magnet on Thursday afternoon. 

In singles, LAMP’s Reena Chen defeated Janese Cosby at No. 1, Grace Liu beat Tori Fuller at No. 3, Dabeen Choi beat Margie Ann Prescott at No. 4, McKenzie Kim defeated Kennedi Powell-Bowie at No. 5 and Jamie Lo beat Chelsey McGhee at No. 6.   

BTW Magnet won its lone singles match at No. 2 when Trinity Fuller defeated Hannah Baik. 

In doubles, Choi-Baik defeated Cosby-Fuller at No. 1, Chen-Lo beat Fuller-Prescott at No. 2 and Liu-Kim defeated Khaliyah Kendrick and Hailey Bonner at No. 3.

BOYS TENNIS

LAMP 6, Houston Academy 3

The Golden Tigers faced one of their biggest challenges of the season, losing at No. 1 and No. 2 singles before bouncing back to sweep the doubles competition to secure a 6-3 win over Houston Academy on Friday. 

In singles, Houston Academy’s Mitchell Piedra defeated Ian Shin at No. 1 in a tight 10-8 decision and Brody Williams defeated Ian Kim 10-8 at No. 2. Thomas Buntin also won at No. 5, defeating LAMP’s Richard Chen.

For LAMP, Sun Ho Kim defeated Jason Mun 10-8 at No. 3, Minsoo Park defeated Wills McRae 10-7 at No. 4 and Wonjun Lee defeated Landon King at No. 6.

In doubles, Shin and Sun Ho Kim defeated Piedra-Williams at No. 1, Ian Kim and Lee defeated Mun-McRae at No. 2 and Park-Chen defeated Buntin and Landon King at No. 3.

 

LAMP 9, BTW Magnet 0

LAAMP shut out BTW Magnet on Thursday, sweeping singles and doubles action.

In singles, Ian Shin defeated Saif Tanveer at No. 1, Ian Kim beat Rayyan Haque at No.2, Sun Ho Kim shut out Alex Shin at No. 3, Eric Li defeated Esteban Rodriguez at No. 4, Richard Chen beat Joseph Smith at No. 5 and Wonjun Lee defeated Max Lopez at No. 6.

In doubles, Shin and Sun Ho Kim defeated Tanveer-Haque at No. 1, Ian Kim and Lee beat Shin-Rodriguez at No. 2 and Chen and Minsoo Park defeated Smith and Greg Moore at No. 3.

The Wildcats shut out Baldwin County in singles and double competition on Tuesday. 

In singles, Samuel Treadwell defeated Braxton Tuttle at No. 1, James Treadwell defeated Joshua Rice at No. 2, Trevor Wilson beat Isaiah Madison at No. 3, Grant Speagle defeated Camdyn Mixon at No. 4, Charlie Franklin beat Reed Roberts at No. 5 and Sawyer Speagle defeated Lane Roberts at No. 6.

In doubles, the Treadwell brothers defeated Braxton Tuttle and Joshua Rice at No. 1, Wilson-Speagle defeated Isaiah Madison and Mixon at No. 2 and Franklin-Speagle defeated Roberts-Roberts at No. 3.
